NAVIGATION BAR: A set of buttons the viewer can click. Buttons change pages or just jump down the page.
Buttons with animated effects are called Roll Overs. Drop down menus can also be used on larger sites to simplify buttons.
FRAMES: Web pages can be built in sections so only part of the page changes when you click to a new topic. Keeps the viewer from getting lost when they change pages. This is not used greatly today because search engines can split pages apart.
WELCOME PAGE: A fast loading page with simple choices as to where to go, or the page just flows into your home page. Not necessary for simple sites.
DOMAIN NAME: (Like www.masterofyourowndomain.com) The website address you purchase yearly.
URL: (Uniform Resource Locator) also known as (Universal Resource Locator) An internet address or page on the net. (Like www.masterofyourowndomain.com/glossary.htm)
INTERNETSERVICE PROVIDER (abbr. ISP, also called Internet access provider or IAP) is a company or business that provides access to the Internet and related services.
HOSTING: You have to pay your web host / Internet Service Provider to 'serve' your website files to the internet. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity. (If you do not have a preferred Internet Service Provider, I can recommend some and also set up your hosting account for you).
SEARCH ENGINES : Websites like www.yahoo.com and www.google.com are places viewers can type in search words for what they want to find based on meta tags and text on your site.
META TAGS: (code words for search engines like Google and Yahoo)
Invisible to the user on every well designed website are codes called meta tags. What is important is to load the tags with very relevant words likely to be typed by someone looking for a site like yours. These are called keywords.
KEYWORDS: The words and phrases that potential customers type into a search engine when they are looking for products and services. The web designer writes these at the top of your web pages for the search engines to read. Also called meta tags. You also write a description that is used when the search engine tells the viewer about your site. The best keywords are those that potential customers type in a lot when they are
searching but that competitors don't use.
SITE INDEXING: Unfortunately just building and posting a site is not instant success! You should contact major search engines and submit your site for indexing. Listing your site with online directories is also recommended to insure your site is indexed.
LINKS: An address or word that jumps the viewer from one website or page to an other website or page.
LINKS FROM OTHER SITES: If you can't win the search engine game right away, links are very helpful! If you get a link from a general website that ranks well with the search engines, traffic will come to you this way.
LINKS TO OTHER SITES: Have links going out of your site as well. The engines "see" this and if you trade links with other sites you help each other out.
LINK EXCHANGE: Trade links with other sites and you both benefit.
LINKS WITHIN YOUR SITE: You can link words or images so the viewer jumps to a different part of the page or to a new page in the same site.
UPDATES: Once you have a site it is a good idea to make changes once in a while so the site looks new to repeat visitors and the search engines.
